Project One Process
For project one, I chose the San Diego Surf Film Festival for my event. I really enjoyed this project, as it gave me a chance to explore After Effects more.
Here are my style frames. My first concept was going for a more retro look, using Goudy Heavyface for the text.
I started to use this style, but wasn’t inspired to make the whole video using it. So, it was back to the drawing board to come up with a new idea.
My second concept was more ocean inspired and utilized the festival logo/font for the text. I ended up choosing this as the style for my video, but also incorporated the surf board from the first style frames.
Here are some rough sketches I did for the storyboard. I initially had a VHS falling in the water, but felt the projector made more sense for a film festival. I added a clip below of the VHS in the video.
For my first set of storyboards, I used Anzeigen Grotesk as my secondary typeface, but I wasn’t loving this pairing.
Here is my second set of storyboards. I decided to use the festival logo font for all of the text in the video, as I felt it was more cohesive. I also added in “Live Art, Music, Good Vibes” at the beginning of the video to add more content, and changed the dates to “May 8–11”, as the 2019 festival dates were finally posted.
In the future, I want to have a song picked out earlier so that I can really match it to the video. It was incredibly difficult to try and find a song to match it after. Also, side note: why is royalty free music so awful????
Overall, I’m quite happy with how this turned out. Also, shout out to Sarah for suggesting I make the projector flicker on. It’s one of my favourite parts of the video.
